I was
wondering if I can get some links to some thief Improvement Mods.
i've decided to make a thief, but want them to be more then a
watered down fighter.

Get The
Lighting Mod. It adds a sneak penalty if you wear armor. Also redoes
all the lighting to be more dark.

The lighting
mod is great, makes it so you can't sneak in the day time, also
check out leveled traps

LDones has
made a bunch of mods that really improve being a thief type. I think
they're collated uder Thief Experience Overhaul or something. It
makes lockpicking more difficult, open spells less useful and makes
traps both hard to pick and very very deadly. Makes security a
really useful skill. Also doors in towns that lock at nighttime ala
Daggerfall. Then there's various mods that alter your sneak skill
based on the armour you're wearing and the time of day etc. Light
Based Sneaking makes your sneak go up and down dynamically when
you're near lights or in shadows and let you turn lights off etc,
but the version I used was buggy and had the chance to permanantly
screw up your sneak skill, so use with caution. Also the Dodge
mod if you're an unarmoured thief (although it does give you bonuses
when wearing light armour at high levels of unarmoured
skill).
Someone recently was working on an improved
backstabbing mod, that gives you a huge critical strike bonus with
shortblade, but I don't know if it has reached fruition.

Two smaller
mods that add to the stealth character. BlackJack ( on the summit
) allows the thief to mug folks again ( the first patch to MW
disabled mugging ) Disguise kit ( also on the summit, two
different versions ) Allows a thief with a bounty on his head to
disguise himself from the inquiries of the guards for a short
time. LDones work has already been mentioned and is a must
have. TundroWalker has two must have mods for the thief Dwemer
BioMonitor and Magic Thread. ( on TheLys and The Summit ) one is
like having a companion healer the other is very useful if you also
use a good lighting mod that makes caves and tombs and such
dark. Finally Chalk2 allows the Thief to make notations on the
game surfaces themselves. Useful for marking the doors and entries
to places you have already looted or just for leaving notes about
places you have to come back to later and loot. There is a house
mod that turns one of the original houses in Balmora into an
abandoned house that is actually a Thieve's guild home/black market/
place to stay. ( Thieves den on the summit ) For eye candy the
keyreplacer mod is a fine addition and sirluthors tools make your
picks and probes and hammers stylish and elegant. Disturb the
Dead and Sri's alchemy while not specific to the thief do add some
interesting twists to stealth and tombs. And along this line
BlightBounties and Haunted Tombs. Biges Economy and Taxes mod is
also worth a looksee. Makes mercantile and speechcraft much more
valuable. Vertical limit for climbing to those second story
doors. Bigger mods: Haldenshore and Havish small town and very
large city lots of thieves guild activities. DeathTrap Dungeon and
City of Thieves excellent just excellent.
Finally there
are two very old mods that might be considered "cheating" mods.
spuzzum's starting equipment and Birthsigns ( both on the summit )
spuzzums gives the 1st day off the boat player a few goodies to make
the first week or so of the game a bit easier. Birthsigns introduces
some nicely balanced and extended birthsigns to the game.

Cool, is there
any other place to get these other than summit? I've had bad
experiences with them...

Euro Morrowind
has many of them. TheLys has some and is the only place for some
of them Gamers Roam has some but you do have to register to
download UnforgottenRealms might have a few. On the summit,
for most mods under 1/2 a meg the download is direct no sign in
necessary. Larger mods will require you to logon. For the older
mods I think the summit is probably the best bet.

I just
recently started playing Morrowind again after real life forced me
to give up on it my first atempt, and this time around I'm trying
out a thief character. I've been lurking for the last few days but I
just wanted to come out and thank everyone who's replied to this
thread (and the guy who posted it) for suggesting all these mods;
there are just so *many* out there that I've been having a heck of a
time sorting through them all, and I'm never sure which are good,
which are bad, and which are just plain ugly
(is there a site somewhere that keeps these things
organized?)
In most cases I don't want to make any drastic
changes to the way the game works, but one question I did have was
whether anyone's ever made anything that makes the NPC's go inside
and go to sleep once and awhile? This has always been an annoyance
to me, and now as a thief it's a major frustration. Besides being
completely unrealistic, it's hard to feel like you're skulking
around dodging guards when everyone and their grandmother is just
milling around in the streets 24/7.

No. There are several list sites
that give a good overview of the more competent mods but no one
repository for information on which mods have good or bad
interactions with other mods.

anything that makes the NPC's go inside and go to sleep
Several attempts at giving NPCs
intelligent schedules, nothing so far that is 100%. Looking like
they are asleep is difficult just because of the animation and
scripting limitations of the game engine. There is a beta of a
mod to enhance the realism of criminality ... Crime Enhanced but I
do not believe the modder thinks it is quite ready for
primetime. There is a lockbashing mod on theLys and the LDones
site has probably the most complete nightime doorlocks and schedules
mod.
The default NPCs in MW are a deaf dumb and blind lot
when it comes to noticing misdemeanors.

Compatible Mods List - by Iamhere at the CON
forums, one site dealing specifically with compatibility,
regrettably now somewhat dated. And here, in thread format, as Pinned . . . List of Plugins Test .
IAMHERE was recently reincarnated
as Iamback and is apparently gathering up mods in order to update
this compatibility list. It may take some time. A welcome revision
to a useful tool.

With some very small
gamesettings tweaks, Morrowind NPC's could be turned into real nosy
parkers. Basically the game can be made unplayable by stealth types.
